Hi all, welcome to Britishmuzzleloaders... Don't let the name deceive you!
This is an Historical Shooting Channel that features British and Empire Military Arms from the Victorian era (plus or minus, that is). The Brown Bess, the Baker Rifle, the Enfield, the Snider, the Martini Henry, the Lee-Metford and Lee Enfield and many more!
Although the Channel was stared with a focus on the Enfield Rifle-Musket (hence the name), it has grown in scope and I hope that it might be your source for all aspects of using and shooting these fine old firearms in a military context.
Thanks all for your comments and questions. I look forward to hearing from you.
Cheers,
Rob

Just got done binge whatching this series with my 2 big toes this masterpiece gets 4👍👍👍👍great work loved it
As a German I should prefer the Mauser action, however I own a smelly 3star from 1917. Still works like a dream and action is smooth.
You do the best reviews thank you!
ah yes my favourite muzzle loading gun, the bren
Didn’t these hold 10 rounds ? Why is he only loading 5?
you should do the vickers in ww2
Great! I'll use yours.
Great video 👍 I have a 1804 brown bess, and I am struggling to find out more about it. It has the EIC hart and Mortimer ingraved in the lock. Do you know where have these been used, or a website where I can learn more about it? I am searching the web for weeks now with no luck. 😓
An EIC Bess,..... used in India?.... Just guessing.
@@britishmuzzleloaders That makes sense to me, although I got so many different information that I am not sure anymore. Also weren't these guns traded all over the world? I was hoping that you might know something. Thank you anyway 🙂👍
@@Squarecycle_ A marked HEIC musket (Windus Pattern) was made for the HEIC for use by HEIC troops, so no, not traded all over the world.... Remember that the Windus Pattern Musket was the HEIC's pattern.... it was this musket that was "copied" by the Ordnance to create the "India Pattern" musket.... a bit confusing I know...
@@britishmuzzleloaders I understand now, then what I have is a pretty cool piece. Thank you sir, I really appreciate your help. 😁🙏
Do you know where I can get an authentic reproduction of the khaki uniforms from the boer war? And where could I get a real lee metford mk 2 rifle?
They are surprisingly rare... most are post war stand and fall collars... Try regimental-quartermaster.com
Have you ever been seen or heard of a. 303 with a pinhole peep sight mounted on the butt plate? It was fired lying supine with the butt under your arm sort of, and the pinhole right up neaar the eye and an extra long barrel which rested on the shooter's toes.
Butt mounted sights were common in the era of supine shooting….

What a legend
Great rifle.
The total process of casting the bullets, patching them and the steps to assembling each round is considerable. The recoil abuse of 85 grains of black power and a 500 grain bullet provide are all factors revealing just how determined you are to shoot a Martini-Henry 577/450 rifle.
It really is not that much of pain...
Loved the video man, watching this as Canada Day weekend rolls into town. Men like you keep Canada alive and keep the Caandian spirit strong. Thanks for all your hard work!
Nice! Hope your Canada Day was great!
What a great video. I just got my India pattern brown bess, and I was digging for information but not until I discovered this video and all my questions has been answered. Thank you.
There is more Bess content on the Channel, if you are interested, including a Bess Introduction video..
@@britishmuzzleloaders Yes, I am watching them and I am subscribed. Great content 👍👍
That was somewhat interesting...
Somewhat glad to hear!
@@britishmuzzleloaders Nah, excellent content as always
Been watching your videos awhile now and they are first rate every one of them. I just picked up a P-H Volunteer rifle recently and was happy to find that you had done a video on it.
A fun rifle for sure! A different beast, those small bore rifles!
@britishmuzzleloaders i don't suppose there is any chance of the possibility of seeing a couple pictures of your shooting box? I like your setup and would like to try and build something similar for mine. N-SSA shooter here and my shooting cart for skirmishing isn't really and ideal setup for this rifle.
@@t.jameskerr7561 I am going to do a Pt 2… The spec of the box will be part of it…
@britishmuzzleloaders awesome, i look forward to it. My volunteer rifle is set up a little different, I have a 6x Malcolm side mounted scope on mine. ua-cam.com/video/6_66XB5v6fc/v-deo.htmlsi=uNDFFa2aYZoCMhi2
Can you please do more battles like this! This series has been a masterpiece and it would be great if you would do battles from other wars
This series and others like it are exceptionally labour intensive…. I can only manage them in fits and spurts….. this series, for instance, took 5 years to film and produce…
What country and uniform are you portraying?
No uniform... just personal winter clothing....
You need a more classic brown leather pouch for your rangefinder
Like in the title,..... "modern".... 😀
Sorry but Mary Secole did nothing for the wounded soldiers at best she ran an officers club at worst she was a profiteer. If she was not black or half white Jamaican woman, she would be forgotten to history. I have had correct both my grandkids and their teachers, one of whom admitted quietly that they had to go along with the Secole BS for the sake of their careers.
Yes.
Great series, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Having only recently discovered your channel (via bloke) I am working my way through your content, which is all fantastic, but this one has just blown me away. Absolutely brilliant. Thank you.
Glad you are enjoying things! Welcome!
17:27 I swear, if I didn't know beforehand that this was greenscreen, I would have assumed you had a twin brother.
Haha!
7:08 I noticed that this is the generation when service rifles begin to add top barrel shrouds instead of leaving it exposed.
Barrels get hot, don't you know! 😀
Dear Mr British Muzzleloader, a question: were guns of this time and circumstance afforded the opportunity to have worke-up loads, or did you purchase a card box of cartridges and got what you got, with associated variable accuracy dependent on how each individual gun enjoyed said ammo? I'm guessing the latter, but would appreciate your insight. Thank you, nice video series, Gus.
In the military, you just got what you got... service ammo.... as for commercial offerings, I suppose that it would have been like today with manufacturers making versions of the same round.
@@britishmuzzleloaders thank you for your reply
Nice 👍🏽
Thank you! Cheers!
@@britishmuzzleloaders 🍻
To their great credit, the British soldier always excels despite the sheer incompetence and disregard of their officers and leadership. May their endurance and bravery be forever remembered. Great video, great uniform work too!
Indeed. Though leadership of the Battalion and company officers at Inkerman was beyond reproach... and were there right alongside their men.
BATTLE OF ECCLES HILL: Americans: Wait, how many times did we invade Canada? FURTHER INFO: "Across the Chickabiddy Creek..." Americans: Ok, now he's just making things up....
Haha!
An excellent series on the history and technology of the era, Thank you.
You are most welcome!
Excellent stuff sir. I was particularly struck by the results of shooting at the "Fenian" targets, most of the hits would have been disabling rather than fatal, which does reflect the casualties reported for Eccles Hill.
Glad you enjoyed it! The hits are indicative of general accuracy only... a link with their position on the target and the actual casualties on the day is a bit spurious.... We are after all dealing with non service loads and bullets which require excessive workup to find sight settings and sight pictures to achieve the accuracy that would have been taken for granted with service ammo and sights.
@@britishmuzzleloaders Oh agreed, but would service ammo at the time in Canada been that consistent? How long had it been in store etc etc etc. Not a question that can easily be answered if answered at all. I was more commenting that your results seemed a fair reflection of casualties on the day, the Fenians were not, as I understand it, trained soldiers so when they came under effective fire they went to ground and when the chance eventually arose they buggered off. You don't have to annihilate the enemy, just persaude them that they have better life options available. Once again, thanks.
This series was definatly interesting.
Glad to hear!
Another excellent vid with top turnout, locations, photo's, people and shooting. Very interesting series which has taught me about a historical event I wasn't very aware of.
The Fenian Raids is an important, though little known part of Canadian history...
75th
Thank you.
A great wrap up to the series. Excellent content BM. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers!
I had one. The 'zero creep' was total BS. The thing was shit because of its BAD recoil, big muzzle blast/flash. OK, I was never a soldier , but that thing no civilian would want, despite the fact that the. 303 British was a very good cartridge
A fun rifle for sure!
To me the Fenian cannon has the look of being made in a modest but competent engineering workshop keeping within its capability to manufacture rather than from a normal artillery factory. Looks like a decent effort but I doubt if it had more than solid shot to fire. Was it rifled? Well done all those involved in the making of this little series.
Agreed John. There are no markings, or other identifying features, nor is it of a pattern that is seen literally anywhere else at this point... The fact that it was a 'cartridge' piece is notable as Artillery at this point, was still in the era of bagged charges. It was rifled, yes.
Beautiful part of the world.
Yes it is!
must of been a real challenge to make(one of the biggest you have done) / the ranges you shoot at blows my mind /
Indeed it was. It's the first series on the Channel with so many guests (and so much footage/discussion) to pair down.... almost 9 hours in just talk with the guests. Glad you enjoyed it!
Really too bad the Irish were told to stop. From my understanding they were actually "winning" quite a bit.
Don't know what you are talking about. The Fenians were outright and thoroughly defeated at Eccles Hill... Have you watched the other videos in the series?
Hey Son of Dawn, I suspect your comment is referencing the May 1866 raid some years before Eccles Hill. That raid had punitive success, in that it repulsed a similarly sized enemy force (by the standards of the day very low casualties on all sides, more a morale thing), looted some civilian houses near the border, and caused some excitement in town. The Fenians then went home ...... I'm assuming this is the bit of that story you're referring to in your remark. Canadian/British authorities were moving to deal more fully with that raid, and if the Fenians hadn't left, they would eventually have met overwhelming forces with a logistics tail, artillery and cavalry way beyond the capacity of a few hundred plucky chaps to deal with. The next battle or perhaps three fights later, their number would inevitably be up. There was no swarm of reinforcements and wagons of supplies rushing on their heels in aid. It was literally just a bunch of guys with whatever they were carrying and their rifles. Their prior battlefield victory was more due to the Canadian/British troops getting confused and making a sequence of bad calls, rather than any remarkable skill or tactics by the Fenians. I think for all concerned, it was terrific the Fenians went home at that time, saving their own and Canadian lives from an inevitable end-game, and saving a bunch of hardship for Canadian civilians having their homes ransacked and looted.
Fantastic very informative thanks for sharing with us
You are most welcome!
Excellent video. Brings a historical engagement to life in a fascinating and innovative way.
Cheers!

A good friend...
Hi. I was wondering if it’s possible to do a video on the Martini-Enfield rifle. Also, will you try to branch off into the sidearms of the British Empire such as the Webley or Adams revolvers? Do take care of yourself Rob. Happy Father’s Day too.
I don't have a Martini Enfield. Never say never on the revolvers, but its an area that is fraught with friction and expense in this country...
your channel is brilliant. Even more informative than documentary in BBC
Very kind. Glad you enjoyed the clip!
Time for a whiskey break mate
Cheers!
my guess is that the cannon is a one of. Bubba got a old gun and tried to modernise it. Do the shell fit a cannon at the time or was that too made by a unknown maker.
Indeed. As mentioned, there have been many people, serious in motivation, try to figure it out, but to no avail thus far...
@@britishmuzzleloaders I don´t know if it´s fun or sad. If I got this right. as I didn´t even know about the conflict before your videos about it.
